Universal is having a very good year this year as Jurassic World has now crossed the $500 million mark domestically and has done $737 million overseas with several areas still to open in. With a total of $1.2 billion, there’re a lot of good feelings going on at the studio after Furious 7 and the potential for Minions as well. Disney had another good weekend with Inside Out as well as it held onto the second slot position by bringing in $52 million.
On the new movie front, things are pretty weak as Ted 2 opened $20 million less than the original did, coming in now at $32 million, while Max hit $12 million. With its lower budget it’s not as bad, and the positive word of mouth may help, but with strong kid fare out there to draw in the family audiences looking for laughs, it’s not expected to do big overall.
The rest of the chart all placed under $10 million with stragglers adding just a bit more coin to their coffers while they can.
New releases for this coming week arrive early, so the weekend chart next week will be a bit of a mess. Both Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys open on Wednesday with Tuesday night showings and are expected to do some solid business overall with wide release.
