‘Insurgent’ Wins Box Office

‘Insurgent’ Wins Box Office With Divergent having a fairly lackluster box office debut previously, it’s interesting to see that Insurgent has largely mirrored the box office take for its debut. Divergent debuted this time last year and on its $85 million budget, it made $288 million worldwide and surprised people by getting its sequels green lit, with Allegiant being split into two parts. Insurgent changed directors – for the better – and upped its budget to $110 million as there’s a lot of special effects work here. It’s debut has it at $101 million total, $47 million of which is overseas and showing solid numbers there.

That win pushed Cinderella to the #2 spot with a $35 million take, bringing it to $122 million domestically and a $253 million total worldwide so far.

The other new opener this weekend was The Gunman, which added another bomb to the season as it debuted with just $5 million in 2800 screens. It’s definitely another indicator that this particular genre is in its waning days at best until we get a resurgence in a few years. With no budget and no international debut yet, it’s expected that this film will simply disappear quickly.

This coming Friday sees two new debuts arriving with the wide release of Get Hard in 3200+ screens and Home in 3600 screens. Get Hard will fill the comedy side that’s coming up dry so far this year, especially after Unfinished Business crashed, while Home will bring the first animated film out in wide release and it’ll likely do well, though the marketing campaign nationally still feels weak overall. Home already had a mild international opening and has brought in $20 million.
