What They Say:
Takeo Goda is a giant guy with a giant heart. Too bad the girls don’t want him! (They always go for his good-looking best friend, Sunakawa.) Used to being on the sidelines, Takeo simply stands tall and accepts his fate. But one day when he saves a girl named Yamato from a harasser on the train, his (love!) life suddenly takes an incredible turn! Takeo can hardly believe it when he crosses paths with Yamato again, and he finds himself falling in love with her… But with handsome Sunakawa around, does Takeo even stand a chance?

We’ve been seeing some more of My Love Story!!’s more somber side, but it’s back to the pure sweetness that we’re a little more familiar with this time. The premise is about as straightforward as you can get: Takeo and Yamato have a picnic date, with the added twist of Takeo having not asked Suna for advice and bringing Yamato to the mountains, which seems like a natural choice to him until he realizes that she’s not exactly built for such an environment. Of course Yamato is just happy to be spending time with Takeo, so much so that the perspective tends to shift to her more often than usual to show her reactions of pure bliss and excitement, featuring some interesting little spirits who escape from her in greater quantity and frequency as the episode progresses. A bit like the gag of Takeo’s ever-changing shirt last episode, this is something we’ve never seen before that becomes one of the most defining characteristics of the episode, and in both cases I appreciate the humor and (particularly for this one) the cuteness but feel that the amount of use after just being introduced doesn’t work as smoothly as much of its material.
Things might be a bit boring if that’s all there was to the episode, though, which is usually a good excuse for this show to bring in some absurd life-or-death situation to allow Takeo to casually save the day. It’s a thing this show does, and if you don’t appreciate the joke I’d just hope it doesn’t detract from the other merits of the show too much for you. I enjoy it well enough and it’s been a while, so seeing just how extreme these situations end up getting is a lot of fun. The point this time isn’t that they could’ve died or that Takeo is amazing, but that the two of them are now stranded in the middle of nowhere all alone. Takeo doesn’t think much of the situation except that he wants to protect Yamato, but Yamato goes even crazier thinking about the implications of such a scenario, reminding us of her wonderfully pure concept of impurity.
Of course it’s not nearly so eventful, but the limited understanding of what’s going on from the rest of the cast is what makes the episode. We’ve met Takeo’s mother and it made perfect sense that she was his mother, but this time we also see his father, who fits the role of Takeo’s other parent just as perfectly, and the interactions of his parents are gold, even beyond the level of Takeo and his mother. The real winners this episode, though, are Yamato’s friends, who display the kind of high school girl reactions that fit so brilliantly with the very different events that unfolded, and who always steal the show with just how excited and how wrong they are.
My Love Story!! is back to being little more than very sugary fluff, but you’ll get no complaints about that. It also brings back the extreme dangers that Takeo easily thwarts, allowing some time alone and most importantly a wave of comedic misunderstandings that add so much to the fun.
